About the Replay
The Replay is a collaboration between the GAA, RTÉ Archives and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland.
It was created with one simple idea in mind: to help people relive iconic moments in Irish sporting history through the voice of Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh.
For generations of supporters, Micheál’s commentary went beyond match coverage. His lilting Kerry accent and unique turn of phrase captured the drama, the colour, the rivalries, the heartbreak and the joy of Gaelic Games. His voice became part of the fabric of Irish life, a permanent fixture in homes, pubs, cars and community halls across the country.
The Replay brings those moments back.
Working with the GAA and RTÉ Archives, we have carefully selected historic All-Ireland Finals that shaped counties, communities and memories and made them easily accessible again, all in one place. Some of these recordings are still being recovered and restored – where a part of the match is currently missing, we are gradually locating, stitching and joining the archive files to make each match as complete as possible.
The Replay is designed as an ever-growing library, with more iconic matches and moments to be added over time.
In partnership with The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, the website has been designed with reminiscence in mind. Familiar voices, county colours and memorable sporting moments can spark conversation, connection and shared stories, particularly for older audiences and families supporting loved ones living with dementia.
The Replay is not a medical or therapeutic service. It is a cultural and heritage project: a space to sit back, listen, and remember.
